The all-American family is much more diverse than it used to be. The United States is a melting pot of several different cultures and customs, so there is no cookie-cutter family image. For many immigrants, life in America can be a rough road filled with many set-backs, especially if they have yet to become an official American citizen. Going from emigrating from your native country to integrating into your new community is a brave process that many go through in order to join their family in America.
Greater Bergen Community Action’s New Americans program assists immigrants wishing to obtain U.S. citizenship through the naturalization process. Clients are taught in small, classroom settings and focus on American civics and culture. All services are free of charge and aim to give foreign-born individuals knowledge and confidence to integrate fully in the United States. For more information about the New Americans program or to enroll, contact the case manager, Lilliam Cartagena, at (201) 366-1020 ext. 2034 or visit our website at www.greaterbergen.org.
