GBCA Honors New Jersey's Lieutenant Governor and DCA Commissioner Sheila Oliver at Annual Gala

Paramus, NJ—Greater Bergen Community Action, Inc. (GBCA), the federally-designated anti-poverty agency of Bergen County, who in recent years expanded to provide services in the cities of Paterson, Jersey City and Passaic, hosted its 11th Annual Gala to honor New Jersey's Lieutenant Governor and DCA Commissioner Sheila Oliver, for her achievements and commitment to anti-poverty initiatives in New Jersey.

On Thursday, September 27, 2018 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Hilton Hotel in Hasbrouck Heights, NJ. GBCA’s 2018 Fall Gala was supported by HUB International, a platinum sponsor; MBAF Certified Public Accountants and Advisors, a gold sponsor; and Meridia Capodagli Property, United Supply Corp., and Pearlman & Miranda, LLC, all silver sponsors.

For over 50 years, GBCA has dedicated itself to helping people through an extensive network of services and resources which provide individuals with the assistance they need to lead the lives they deserve. GBCA put the spotlight on the state’s first African American lieutenant governor, Sheila Oliver, also a Community Action pioneer.

While accepting the award, Sheila states, “Early in my life, I developed an advocacy kind of an attitude. I knew that there were people in life who could not speak for themselves and they needed someone to speak on their behalf, advocate for them, and fight for them. I understood early in life that I was to be a revolutionary. My path was set out for me.” She later continues, “Being Lieutenant Governor is no different than the work I’ve ever done. I’ve just moved my desk into a different building.”

Sheila Oliver’s continuous hands on efforts to improve the lives of New Jersey families is both admirable and inspiring. The generous support at our Gala will impact Bergen County, Jersey City, Paterson, and Passaic residents of all ages on their journey to a better, self-sustainable future. Help not just for the here and now but to support the goal of brighter days for the foreseeable future—a place many people who now struggle cannot yet imagine.
