Free Preschool Programs for Low-Income Families: Open Enrollment

Hackensack, NJ – Enrollment is open for Greater Bergen Community Action (GBCA) Head Start and Early Head Start preschools, which are free federally funded programs that serve the educational, psychological, and health needs of low-income children ages 0-5 in Bergen County, Jersey City and Paterson.

GBCA Head Start programs adhere to both state and federal guidelines and are staffed with certified teachers, family workers, healthcare professionals and paraprofessionals – including registered dietitians who help maintain the students’ nutrition and offer classes for parents. All Head Start and Early Head Start students are provided with:

  • free education

  • free vision, dental, health and developmental screenings

  • free diapers and formula

  • free nutritious meals: breakfast, lunch and a snack throughout the school day

GBCA Head Start’s mission is to not only prepare its students for kindergarten, but to prepare the entire family for life beyond the program. Through a research-based curriculum, the programs develop children fundamentally, socially and academically, while also providing adult education through the agency’s Education and Training Center, which offers free English as a second language (ESL), High School Equivalency (HSE) and US citizenship classes.
