On February 17, 2023, Greater Bergen Community Action (GBCA) distributed 1,200 bookbags to all of the children enrolled in our Head Start, Early Head Start, and Expectant Moms programs. The bags, distributed to families in Jersey City, Paterson, and Bergen County, were packed with seven healthy snacks including mandarins, veggie straws, applesauce, and shelf-stable hummus, an Emergent Readers coloring and sight word book, and printed materials about additional GBCA social and health programs they may be eligible for.
“I am so excited to be able to provide the children with healthy snacks and activities to enjoy over the long holiday weekend in February,” said Audra, the Director of Food and Nutrition Services. “Additionally, it’s nice for the children to have a GBCA backpack to commemorate their time as a Head Start student.”
One of the fundamental principles of GBCA’s Head Start is to provide children and their families with nutritious meals, snacks and recipes. GBCA’s Head Start program is designed to give children and their families the foundation and tools for a successful future, and that entails a healthy and nutritious diet for the collective whole.
