Greater Bergen Awards its Annual Scholarship to Local Youth Despite COVID-19 Crisis

Annually since Lois A. Braithwaite’s passing in 2015, Greater Bergen Community Action awards scholarships in her name: a name that embodies educational excellence and community service, as reflected in each chosen recipient. This year, Greater Bergen awarded 28 Lois A. Braithwaite Scholarships to qualifying students who are pursuing undergraduate level college, vocational or trade school and who demonstrate economic need. The scholarship is intended to help students in meeting some of the ancillary costs associated with pursuing a post-secondary education. With increased support from sponsors, the Lois A Braithwaite Scholarship was increased from $1,500 to $2,000 per recipient. Sponsors of the 2021 Lois A. Braithwaite Scholarship Fund are: Hub International (Platinum); BDO, USA, LLP (Gold); Meridia Capodagli Property (Silver); New Brunswick Performing Arts Center (Silver); United Supply Corp (Silver); Winn Companies (Silver); and Pearlman & Miranda, LLC (Bronze). Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Greater Bergen held its scholarship ceremony virtually, premiering a prerecorded scholarship ceremony video on June 14th, 2021, in which each scholarship winner is introduced and celebrated for their accomplishments. All of this year’s recipients were graduates of high schools in areas that Greater Bergen serves, which are Bergen County, Paterson and Jersey City.
