We're amplifying our efforts to perform complimentary tests for lead-based paint in qualified New Jersey homes, and to either remediate or abate the homes that test positive for free.
These heightened efforts come amid recent news that a decrease in lead testing among New Jersey children was a side effect of the COVID-19 pandemic. Inevitably, children residing in homes with the presence of lead were spending much more time inside and were longer exposed to lead-based paint during the pandemic.
Last year, Governor Murphy signed new laws to take significant steps towards ending exposure to lead across New Jersey communities, one of them requiring all rental properties built before 1978 be inspected for lead. Greater Bergen offers testing, remediation and abatement services that aid in those efforts.
Greater Bergen’s Lead-Safe program offers remediation and abatement services in both Bergen County and Paterson, and abatement services in Passaic. Qualifications for the program are:
· Income eligible residents of Bergen County, and the cities of Paterson and Passaic who live in one or two-family homes built prior to 1978
· Residents whose property is confirmed to have the presence of lead-based paint hazards
· Structurally sound properties with current real estate taxes, water, and sewer
Qualified individuals and families can have a free home lead test scheduled for their home. If the home tests positive for the presence of lead, Greater Bergen’s certified inspectors will perform a thorough inspection and determine whether the home requires remediation or abatement.
