GBCA Awards Thirty Students with Annual Lois A. Braithwaite Scholarship

Hackensack, NJ – Annually since Lois A. Braithwaite’s passing in 2015, Greater Bergen Community Action (GBCA) awards scholarships in her name: a name that embodies education and community service, and is a reflection of each chosen recipient.

Lois A. Braithwaite served as President and Board Chair Person of Greater Bergen Community Action for 23 years until her passing in January 2015. She was a teacher, volunteer, founder of the James Street Block Association, and recipient of the New Jersey State Governor’s Jefferson Award for her exceptional community service. Lois championed for those in need, and was instrumental in helping GBCA reach out to the homeless and expand its Head Start program.

Greater Bergen Community Action keeps her legacy alive with this scholarship.

On May 28, GBCA held a ceremony for the 2019 Lois A. Braithwaite Scholarship recipients at Hackensack Performing Arts Center in Hackensack, NJ. The scholars and their families were welcomed by GBCA’s Chief Operating Officer, Dr. Allan De Giulio, and then greeted with encouraging and congratulatory words from GBCA’s President and CEO, Robert F. Halsch, and special guests Bergen County Freeholder, David Ganz, and Bergen County Freeholder Chairwoman, Germaine Ortiz.

During the ceremony, each recipient was acknowledged for their accomplishments and awarded scholarships towards their continued education, and then all attendees were invited to join GBCA staff for light refreshments to cap off the celebration of achievement.

The Lois A. Braithwaite Scholarship will continue to aid deserving scholars annually on their educational journeys. To learn more about the scholarship and Greater Bergen Community Action, visit www.GreaterBergen.org or email info@GreaterBergen.org with inquiries.
